HOW TO: Brew Your Baraco Coffee (Kapeng Barako)

Everyone of us wants to have the best tasting coffee every time we brew. Unfortunately, not all of us is aware of how to blend or brew these precious beans. In result, we just go out and have our coffee at the coffee shops or have our coffee during our office coffee breaks. This blogpost will give you a perfect cup of Baraco coffee every time you blend, if not, this guide will help you achieve the taste you want.

This is just a guideline to help you on brewing your freshly packed Casa Liberica 100% Roasted Coffee Beans. Remember that brewing or blending your own coffee, you do not need to be a genius or a coffee geek. Coffee is an art to be shared to other people. The best tasting coffee relies on your passion and enthusiasm as a brewer and lover.

This guide is for those who don't have an available Auto-drip coffee maker at home. For those who have, brewing the coffee is just the same, the taste will just depend on how much ground beans you have placed. Remember that, Baraco coffee is known to have a strong, earthly and herbal taste. If you don't want a strong blend, you are free to adjust the amount of ground bean or water.

1.) If you ordered for a whole bean. Make sure that you have a coffee bean grinder available as grinding will help the extraction of the beans easily.

2.) Grind your beans according to your need. There are several ways of grinding your bean but the three kinds are commonly used: Coarse, medium and fine. But for this guide, a coarse grind will do.

Coarse: French -Press, Vacuum Coffee Maker.
Auto-drip coffee makers can also be used.

Medium: Perfectly used for Auto-Drip coffee makers

Fine: Generally used for Espresso Machines.

3.) After grinding your beans, measure approximately 200 mL of purified, filtered water (Never use distilled water if you don't want your coffee to mess up.) and heat it up until it boils.

4.) While waiting for your water to boil, measure 2tbsp. or 10 grams of your ground Casa Liberica coffee beans and place it in a container (ceramic or stainless). Never use plastic.

5.) Upon boiling of the water, measure 180 mL from the 200 mL water you have just boiled and placed it in the ground coffee beans.(At this step, foam will occur but don't panic because this is normal.)

6.) Set your timer to 5 minutes and cover your container. Slowly and gently mix your coffee every minute.

Note: Covering your container will increase the extraction of your beans while keeping it hot.

Tip: You may place your mixture in a clean thermos. (Make sure that your thermos is only for this kind of coffee.)

7.) Using a mesh or a cheesecloth, or anything that can filter your coffee. Slowly and gently pour your coffee on to a separate container. If you are not going to consume all of your brewed coffee, a thermos is needed to keep your coffee hot.

Tip: You may transfer first your freshly brewed Casa Liberica coffee into a separate container and then remove ground beans left on your thermos and transfer again your brewed coffee to your thermos.

8.) Add brown sugar until desired sweetness is achieved.

The Secret!: Baraco coffee can be added with honey or muscovado sugar as sweeteners. Brown sugar, honey and muscovado works best with Baraco coffee.

9.) Enjoy your freshly brewed Casa Liberica 100% Roasted Baraco Coffee.

Top 5 Tips: Press Pot Brewing

http://www.flickr.com/photos/tmoertel/4317411142/

Coffee and tea lovers always wanted to have their perfect batch of coffee every time they blend and brew. This post is made to give you expert tips on how to make a perfect cup of coffee using French Press/Press-Pot method.

    1.)    Even-out

We suggest not to stir the brewed coffee when pouring it to the cups to even out the coffee’s taste and strength. If you have friends that will drink your freshly brewed coffee, we advise that you distribute the coffee evenly across the serving cups, placing a small amount into one cup, then into another. By doing this repeatedly, the strength of your coffee will even out. Think of this Logic, “As the water goes near in contact with the ground beans (top-bottom), its concentration increases.” Thus, distributing it portion by portion, the cups will receive equal layers of the coffee from the press-pot.

    2.)    Plunge to Extract

Remember that for you to have a good tasting coffee; extraction of the ground beans is crucial. Plunging the press up and down will agitate the ground during steeping. Thus, extracting the beans more and giving you flavorful coffee.

    3.)    Pour Slowly

Grounds will always be in every cup. It’s is part of this press pot experience and as a matter of fact, enthusiasts and aficionados very much like it. If you notice that the amount of grounds in your cup is too many; what you can do instead is to pour your freshly brewed coffee slowly. By doing this, grounds will be less agitated from the bottom of your press pot.

    4.)    Brew Small Batches

If you are not going to consume all the freshly brewed coffee, we suggest that you brew small bathes only. The press cools very fast and you don’t have a way to preserve the heat. If this happens, we advise that you buy a new thermos or any insulated metal pot that can preserve the heat for some time)

5.)    Clean your press pot thoroughly

Grounds and oils that are hard to see can stack up on the hard metal plate, to the crevices of your  pot and especially to the mesh filter. This happens when you did not dissemble your plunger and you just rinsed it or just placed it into the dishwasher. We highly suggest and encourage you to disassemble your plunger and clean it thoroughly to avoid what we call “seasoning” of these metal parts. You don’t want that to happen, do you?

Now, your blended coffee can be compared to a coffee bought in coffee shops or you can impress your boss when you had your coffee breaks in the office or give a good impression on your business partners when having a meeting. With these top 5 tips, you can now sit and relax while having your perfect tasting coffee or tea.

We highly encourage you to try the Philippines’ best tasting coffee. Casa Liberica Roasted Baraco Coffee. What we offer you is Pure “Kapeng Barako” that will give you a different perspective on coffee. We are very sure that you will never regret you’ve tried ours.

HOW TO: French Press for a Perfect Coffee

http://stumptowncoffee.com
There are various ways of preparing your coffee but French Press is the method commonly used for the reason that it is the cheapest equipment, the easiest method and it gives the most flavorful coffee. Frech Press is also known as Press pot or Melior. Thus, different countries call this in many ways but it has the same procedure and it has the same design. It is a device used to brew coffee with hot water and a coarse ground coffee bean. Take note that the ground bean used here is coarse. If you tried to use a fine ground coffee, it will just seep through the filter and go along with your coffee. I am sure you don't want to drink your coffee with tiny bits of ground coffee right?

Basically, the principle behind the method is that you place the desired amount of coarse ground coffee and an ample amount of hot water to the device, making the two components together. This step is also known as steeping, you let the coarse ground coffee bean in contact with the water for a few minutes. Many people say that the magic happens on this step because it is where a peculiar extraction happens and different flavors come out. In fact, majority of the people who brews coffee prefer this kind of method mainly because of this reason. In addition, you can use this press pot on brewing your own tea.

Brewing your coffee using this method is pretty easy, I have laid out the procedures for you to have a perfect cup of brewed coffee and impress your friends.

Materials needed:

  1. Kettle - You place your water here
  2. Fresh Water - (Note: Use filtered, tap or purified water only and don't use distilled water.)
  3. Stove - To put your water to boil.
  4. Scale - Digital or normal kitchen scale to weigh your coarse ground beans
  5. Timer - Timing is important in brewing your coffee
  6. Fresh coarse ground coffee
  7. Complete set-up of Press pot
Procedure:

  1. Fill your kettle with water and set to boil
Remember: As a rule of thumb, for every two (2) tablespoons of coffee, used 6 ounces (180 mL) of water. But this can be adjusted to suit your taste preferences. In addition, don't forget that your water evaporates upon boiling and that you need to add 4 ounces (120 mL) more of water for pre-heating or scalding. Therefore, you need to heat at least 10 ounces (300 mL) of water.

      2.  While waiting for your water to boil, grind your whole coffee bean to coarse. (If you don't have yet a ready made ground coffee.

      3.   Stir the water inside and discard it.

      4.   Add your pre-weighed coarsely ground coffee.

      5.   Fill your press-pot half-full because your ground bean will form foams and swell as it comes to contact with water. Let it rise and subside for a few minutes..

      6.   When the foam subsided, add the remaining water to the pot and quickly set your timer to 4 minutes.
      7.   Cover your pot with the plunger cap and press the plunger just enough and ensure that the grounds
are under the water.

      8.   Every 1 minute, agitate the grounds by pressing the plunger up and down. This step prevents clumping and provides you better extraction.
      9.   After 4 minutes, slow and firmly depress the plunger.

      10.  Pour your coffee to your cup slowly to avoid agitation of the grounds and keep sediments at the bottom.

Now you can have your own freshly brewed gourmet coffee at home when coffee shops are full and your boss didn't allow you to have your coffee break.
There are available variations of this device so what I can say is, explore and experiment  and see what works well with you. Remember that you don't have to be a geek or a genius to have a cup of coffee. Creativity and enthusiasm will give you the best tasting coffee you've ever wanted.

Next topic to be discussed will be TIPS on brewing on your Press pot.

How Does Your Coffee Taste?

http://kaffeescape.wordpress.com
Maybe we are here because we are coffee lovers, coffee enthusiasts or we just love to know different kinds of coffee recipes, health benefits and other coffee stuffs. Maybe we are here because we want something new when we visit our favorite coffee shops and we can have a good talk with other mates at coffee breaks. But have we ever thought of rating a coffee's taste?

An exciting way to enjoy your coffee is to rate or grade its taste. This is called coffee tasting, and if you know how to do this, then you have an edge if what you are drinking is good or not. Don't be afraid because coffee tasting isn't hard at all, you don't need to be a coffee guru, you don't need to know high-flown bombastic words to judged and impress, and most of all, you don't need specialized equipments. All you need to have is a freshly brewed coffee placed in a normal cup, your nose, and of course your tongue, that's all!

There are many ways to brew your coffee but the easiest way and the most commonly used is french press. French press allows you to easily distinguish flavors and releases all the oils of the coffee. Once you have your hot freshly brewed coffee, don't drink it yet! This is one of the common mistakes of beginners, your coffee's taste are revealed as your coffee cools down. Therefore, you take a sip and slurp of your coffee every 5mins to taste it and gather data. What you do when your coffee is still hot is to experience and smell its aroma. Aroma is one of the major aspects of your coffee, and this is one of the first criteria that you need to determine if your coffee is good or not. Take note that coffee tasting is a skill and that a person must be sensitive on the flavors of a coffee. A key note here is practice, you should practice in order to enhance and further develop the sensitivity of your palette.

Here are the steps in coffee tasting,

First is to brew two different kinds of coffee. Anything that is different about them will do, like kind of roast, where did it came from, or different method of processing.

Then, by cupping your hand on top of the cup/mug, get your nose into it and take in the aroma of the coffee. Take note that your coffee must be hot and freshly brewed. The hotness of your coffee will give the aroma that you need.

Next is to slurp and sip the coffee with 5 minutes interval and evaluate its taste. As we have said earlier, coffee gives off different tastes as it cools down. The harder you slurp the better, this ensures that the coffee reaches all your sensory buds, helping you to easily determine its flavors.

After you sip and slurp, evaluate and jot down what you have tasted. Jotting and making records what you have tasted will help you remember different tastes of coffee. This is one way of enhancing your palette.

Coffee tasting is better when you do it with a friend because you can discuss each other's evaluation. Remember that having a cup of coffee is a kind of recreation enjoyed with peers.

On the next part of this blogpost, we will give you different characteristics of a good coffee. So check us often.

We highly recommend that you try our very own Casa Liberica "Kapeng Barako" coffee. Taste the difference and Experience the good life!

Philippines' Finest Coffee Bean

This is my third post about coffee and on this blogpost, I will tell you why despite of the climate here in the Philippines, we Filipinos still love coffee especially “Kapeng Barako” as a morning drink and as an afternoon tea. When coffee became famous, Filipinos started to invest coffee shops with these kind of theme, wherein they cater and advertise "Kapeng Barako" as their product bearer. Surely Filipinos love to socialize and thus they had their coffee break at the coffee shops.

Your Coffee's Wonder Health Benefits

http://www.dailygossip.org/

Everyone loves coffee, who would not want to have a cup of coffee in the morning? Have it at the coffee shop, at home or at your coffee break in the office . Name it! You can drink it anywhere that is why almost everyone loves it! It's one of the pleasures that one can have especially in the morning. But, as this wonder drink gives us pleasure, it has issues on it. Did you ever wonder why despite of its issues and criticisms, people still loves it and and doctors do drink it? This post will get in to those issues and will prove them wrong!

Who would not know the issues on coffee? It is once said that a cup coffee can give you so much problems in health and when taken for a long period of time, it can give you life threatening problems. It's quite ironic that coffee before is questionable, but now it is considered to give you health benefits.

Get to Know Your Coffee Beans

http://www.experienceproject.com
My day isn’t complete without having a cup of coffee in the morning. It literally makes my day and makes me stay awake during my 7A.M morning classes. When I am late for school, I don’t eat anymore my breakfast but I make sure that I drink my coffee. I’m no coffee addict; it’s just that I wanted something that can heat up my empty stomach especially in the morning. I know this happens a lot to you too!

On this day, I pondered about what are the kinds of coffee beans that are out in the commercial and thought that it is a good topic to post. So I researched and here it is! There are currently 73 types of coffee beans, but only three (3) types of these coffee beans have commercial significance in the global market. These are Liberica, Robusta and Arabica.
